On 12 July 2025, shop windows across Rugby Town Centre will be showcasing creations made from yarn or fabric by a talented team of Rugby Yarn Bombers. All inspired by the novels by Lewis Carroll (who attended Rugby School as Charles Dodgson). These two images show items connected to chapters in Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
The sheep – current on display at the Alex – was encountered in the ‘Through the Looking Glass and what Alice Found There’ chapter 5 (Wool and Water). It interprets this passage:
“… Opposite her was an old sheep, sitting in an arm-chair, knitting, and every now and then leaving off to look at her through a great pair of spectacles”.
The roses in the other picture are playing host to a caterpillar. This is a felting experiment towards the star of Ch 5 of Alice in Wonderland (Converation with a Caterpillar) which will be on display at Art at the Alex from 12 July. You may see further work in progress on this during visits to the Alex meantime. Ceri is also proposing to change the display on the ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ plinth here on a weekly basis so come and see the sheep before next Thursday!
